What is a Dental Emergency?
Most of us will experience some form of tooth sensitivity or pain at some time in our lives. It is just part of being human. Therefore, it’s not always easy to determine whether the issue is considered an emergency. The most common types of dental emergencies include:
A persistent toothache may signal an underlying condition such as tooth decay, infection, or dental abscess. While over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage the pain, you should consult with a dentist to ensure you receive a proper diagnosis and treatment.
If you have a chipped or broken tooth, there is a chance the tooth can be repaired. Collect as many pieces of the tooth as you can and see your dentist as soon as possible.
Note: If your dental trauma is accompanied by head trauma, you should prioritize the head injury and visit either an emergency room or urgent care center.
There is a good chance that an avulsed (knocked out) tooth can be saved so long as it is reinserted into its socket within the first few hours.
If you have a knocked out tooth, you can try to gently reinsert it back into its socket. If it cannot be safely reinserted, tuck the tooth into your cheek, place it in a glass of milk, or saliva-moistened towel, and take it to your nearest dentist. Try not to touch the fragile roots and do not attempt to clean the tooth!
Trauma such as a sports injury can stretch the periodontal ligaments of the tooth, causing temporary looseness. This typically resolves itself within a week or two. If you have a loose tooth without trauma, it may indicate gum disease or periodontal disease is present.
A lost crown or dental filling can leave the tooth vulnerable to infection or additional damage. A lost crown or dental filling is considered an emergency.
When an infection spreads to the tooth's pulp or roots it can cause painful sensitivities to pressure as well as to hot and cold foods and drinks. If you notice severe pain, fever or swelling, call our office as soon as possible.
